This is my personal opinion about the production. I'm a long time fan, not a professional in any entertainment industry, so what I liked and disliked is peculiar to me, and not "what's so" about the production.
What I liked:
I liked the music.
I liked the acting. I didn't find any problems with anyone in the production EXCEPT for the "smiling Vulcans". That DID bother me.
I liked the SFX. They were fine.
I liked the TOS Enterprise going into warp using the original engine sound inside the ship, and the TMP Warp Effect externally.
I liked the actor that plays Charlie X. I guess Robert Walker Jr. was unavailable, and the choice of this actor was excellent. He looks and sounds enough like Robert Walker Jr. that it was seemless.
What I didn't like:
As above, I didn't like the smiling vulcans.
I didn't like the "beam them to the bridge" thing... It would have been simpler and more economical to the story to have them beamed to the transporter room off-camera and then have them enter from the Turbolift escorted by guards. That would have made a lot more sense.
I thought the introduction of Peter Kirk was a little jarring. I think he should have been introduced more specifically by one character to another before Uhura arrives on the bridge so that we know he's Peter. James Cawley playing Jim Kirk in New Voyages makes his appearance as "Commander Kirk" a little confusing. Possibly having him standing next to the elevator and Uhura exiting, giving him a hug and saying "Peter Kirk... as I live and breathe. For a minute I thought it was your Uncle Jim standing there..." might have worked better.
Not much else I had a problem with.
Sure... It could have been better. Most of the movies could have been MUCH better.
But, given how this production was conceived and created, I think it's wonderful. It's certainly a lesson to Paramount about how to listen to fans a little more, and make Trek that fans want, rather than Trek that Paramount wants to make.
Hopefully, the new Trek XI movie will be more like STOGAM and less like Star Trek V.
I'm looking forwards to the next two parts.
My friend Tom visited the sets last year and was very impressed by them. I hope someday to be able to volunteer to help film an episode of STNV. I injured both knees and my back, and until I'm closer to 100%, I don't think I have much to offer the production.
Best of luck with the next two parts.

Actually, the Commander Kirk character was not specifically Peter. It was always a generic Commander, as Kirk had 3 nephews. Someone keeps changing the listing on imdb to Peter, despite our continual efforts to have it listed as merely Commander, as was in the script and in the credits...
